to anyone who needs to hear this,
I don’t think a lot of people understand that no matter how progressive or well-read you are, there are always going to be moments in your life where somebody pushes back against something that’s so culturally ingrained you never even considered it before. And you’ll say “Huh, it never occurred to me to challenge this but you’re right,” and that doesn’t mean you were “morally toxic” before, it means you’re a non-omniscient human capable of growth.
Also, some preferred terms for things will change and evolve, and terms we prefer now might eventually be considered gauche or even offensive, and that doesn’t mean you were a bigot at the time for using them. It means we evolved as a society and chose new terminology to reflect that change.
Nobody is a fully formed realisation of progressivism that can predict all shifts and modes of thought. The world will always change, and hopefully you will, too

Some random thoughts on Our Flag Means Death
*spoilers maybe ?
The scene when the crew are tying to figure out what Jim wants to be called/referred to. Is such a genderfluid/non-binary experience
The other day my wife was asking me what pronouns I wanted her to use when talking about me to other people and I was like- I literally don’t know! I don’t know. Lol
So comparing this show to Black Sails-
A few years ago I watched all of Black Sails and then made my wife watch it because I loved it so much lol-
and the final scene of the show - my wife was so stressed. She was like saying stop, stop, stop - over and over, because the whole show - and so many shows for that matter have always been so hostile to queer characters-
She thought that final scene would end with them being harmed. (Purposely vague to avoid spoilers)
And it made me think in Our Flag Means Death- Neither of us ever felt that fear. Being queer was so normal to the show that it, didn’t even feel like it could be an issue or a reason why any character could be harmed. Yeah they could be harmed for idk regular pirate things lol but not because they were queer.
And it makes me sad. And happy. It’s complicated. I’m sad that so many queer people have this trauma that any joy we see, we know to brace ourselves for pain. We know that there is only a short amount of time that we’re allowed to see ourselves on screen. A brief embrace, a look, a quiet euphemism. And then it’s taken away.
But this show really got to heart of what the queer experience is like. We all just want to be silly, and find love and friendships, and make connections and feel comfortable and safe. And this show didn’t take that away.

And one last thing- Ed is so cool and sexy as hell and I’m like I want to pull that look off - so I painted my nails black and I’ve been looking at how to make my outfits edgier.
- but then I laughed when I realized that I’m definitely more like a Stede looks, & personality wise - so it would be exactly Stede wanting to be like Ed, & wearing his clothes lol.
